What is LGBT+? A beginners’ workshop for communities

Around 1 in 20 people are LGBT+, and even more in younger generations. Whilst some of us have learned and asked questions about LGBT+ people through our TV programmes, schools, universities and workplaces, many haven’t. But that learning is vital to improving understanding and acceptance of LGBT+ people within our families, networks and communities, and between generations.

This is a workshop (up to 2 hours) that organisations can host, enabling their communities or members to understand LGBT+ terms quickly, and support and improve relationships with relatives, friends, neighbours and strangers who are LGBT+.

Example slide titled “Words used in conversations about LGBT+ people”. Words listed are LGBTQIA+, pronouns, queer, out, Pride and identify.
  • Local, community and membership organisations can book a workshop to be delivered with their people. This widens access to knowledge about LGBT+ people, including to the groups below.

    • People with limited access to the internet

    • People not in the labour market

    • People who aren’t learning about diversity & inclusion through education, work or elsewhere

    • Unpaid carers

    • Older people

    • Recent immigrants

Once booked, you can publicise this session to anyone who wants to:

    • Learn many LGBT+ terms quickly

    • Improve relationships with LGBT+ relatives, friends, neighbours and strangers by showing better understanding, support and interest in them

    • Grow an interest in news, laws and issues affecting LGBT+ people

    • The many terms and concepts connected to the LGBT+ community e.g. lesbian, queer, transgender, pronouns, passing, allyship, coming out

    • Everyday experiences and bigger issues for LGBT+ people now

    • Tips to support and connect with LGBT+ people in your everyday life

  • I’m Taz Rasul. I use she/her pronouns.

I help make local communities more inclusive and joyful for everyone in them. To make that happen, I deliver inclusion training, research and programmes with proactive small businesses and community organisations.

I’ve spent 10+ years running educational, volunteering, skill development, employability and professional development programmes for people across genders, sexualities, races and educational backgrounds. As a former student LGBT+ leader, Stonewall leader and mentor, LGBT+ programme manager and LGBT+ charity director, my specialism is in LGBT+ education and inclusion.

A previous participant described my programmes as “incredible - interactive, entertaining and creatively done!”
